Telycam Explore PTZ Cameras Enhance Quality of Panel Discussion Coverage at Munich
A widely followed panel discussion on “Freedom of Speech – What Are We Still Allowed to Say?” recently took place at Café Reitschule in Munich, featuring Wolfgang Kubicki, Sigmund Gottlieb, Julia Ruhs, and Patricia Riekel tackling vital societal issues. The panel was broadcast and streamed to reach a wider audience, with Magic Multi Media handling the production using Telycam Explore PTZ cameras and advanced production technology to deliver professional-quality video coverage of the event.
The Goals
For the production of this high-profile event, the primary goal was to achieve high-quality, dynamic video coverage in a packed and lively venue. The event organizers needed cameras that could provide clear, professional-grade visuals while capturing close-ups of each panelist during the fast-paced discussion, along with seamless integration into their existing production workflow.
“We wanted a solution that offered flexibility, ease of setup, and high-quality output,” said Michael Lehmann-Horn from Magic Multi Media.
The Solution: Telycam Explore PTZ Cameras
The three Telycam cameras are controlled with a Telycam V-Joy+ AT PTZ controller, with NDI HX3 output from the cameras routed to Magic Max 30 editing system. Two cameras were strategically positioned on the left and right sides of the venue to capture different angles of both individual speakers and the four panelists.
After evaluating several options, Michael and the team chose Telycam’s Explore 1″ PTZ Cameras with 20x optical zoom for their flexibility and image quality. The team deployed three Telycam Explore cameras for dynamic, close-up shots of the panelists, plus one Sony PXW-Z90 1″ Camera for a fixed wide shot of the entire scene – four cameras in total.
Another camera was placed near the production switching area to capture a wide shot of the entire venue, including the audience.
“Despite the fully packed venue, the setup could not have been easier,” explains Michael. “A single network cable to supply power, control, and transmit both audio and video – thanks to NDI HX3.”
Camera Matching Made Simple
The integration of multiple camera types proved straightforward thanks to the Telycam cameras’ excellent color science. “It was easy to match the look of the cameras,” says Michael. “We kept the colors from the Telycam PTZ because they already had a great look, and matched the Sony camera by adding contrast, saturation, and grading the colors.”
Taking Control
During the event, camera control was crucial for capturing the dynamic discussion. “We needed a more intuitive and dedicated controller for the cameras,” Michael explained. “Having a separate, easy-to-use control interface made a huge difference in our workflow. With Telycam’s V-Joy+ AT controller, I can quickly switch between cameras and get the perfect shot without delay.”
The Telycam V-Joy+ AT Controller gave the team the precision they needed for fast camera movement and selection, making the production process more streamlined and efficient. Just one operator can handle all three cameras with a single controller.
The Results
The Telycam Explore PTZ cameras delivered on all fronts, providing high-quality video with excellent sharpness, exposure, and color reproduction. The 1″ sensor in the Explore cameras also provided impressive depth of field, helping panelists stand out from the background for more cinematic, professional-looking shots.
“We are extremely happy with the performance of the Explore cameras,” said Michael. “The ease of setup, coupled with the superb image quality, made the event production seamless. The cameras’ ability to handle different lighting conditions was especially impressive.”
Michael also praises the auto-focusing feature of the Telycam cameras, which kept the speakers in sharp focus even when the cameras were moved between angles. “The focus adjustment is incredibly fast,” he added. “By the time I’m ready to cut to the camera, the shot is already in focus.”
Following the event, the footage was edited using Grass Valley EDIUS 11, with the final video now available on YouTube for viewers worldwide.
