Telycam Explore SE: Coastal Church’s Choice
Coastal Community Church in Parkland, Florida, operates both a broadcast location and a secondary campus in Lighthouse Point. Audio and lighting engineer Kyle LeForge was in search of a PTZ camera to follow the pastor on stage, especially when their volunteer crew was short-staffed. However, he had some reservations about purchasing a PTZ camera. As Kyle put it, “I’ve always been a little bit skeptical, especially because not all PTZ cameras are the same. I’ve seen a lot of really bad ones.”
The Telycam Explore SE PTZ camera has earned the Church Production Road Tested Certification, and Kyle and his team agreed to test it out as part of the Church Production Road Test User Experience. With features like a 1/1.8-inch Sony sensor, NDI and 12G-SDI connectivity, genlock, 30x optical zoom, and the ability to shoot 4K at 60 fps, the Explore SE ticked all the boxes for the church’s needs.
Despite his initial skepticism, Kyle was pleasantly surprised by the camera’s performance. “When we brought the Telycam Explore SE into our mix, I had all those negative thoughts. But what was really nice is the camera has a Sony sensor, so it integrated smoothly with our other Sony cameras. We barely needed any color correction to get it to match the look of our existing gear.”
The church needed a 4K60 camera with multiple outputs for direct NDI transmission to their TriCaster and the ability to record to an SDI recorder at the camera location. Kyle found the Telycam Explore SE surprisingly easy to set up. “I had never set up a PTZ camera or controller before, but when I did, I realized how simple it was,” Kyle shared. “One of the things we were really excited about is the 30x optical zoom, which allowed us to keep it in focus from wide shots all the way in to close-ups on the pastor, with crisp, clear results.”
