Most cameras can compensate for excess light by stopping down the aperture. For PTZ cameras, this approach has a harder ceiling than many operators realize.

PTZ cameras typically use smaller sensors — commonly 1/2.8" or 1/1.8" — and on smaller sensors, diffraction becomes a problem at relatively modest aperture values. Stop down to f/8 or beyond, and the image does not simply get darker: diffraction causes light waves to bend around the aperture blades, softening fine detail across the frame. On a small-sensor PTZ, the practical sweet spot for optical sharpness is generally between f/2.8 and f/4. Closing the aperture further to manage exposure actively degrades the image quality the camera is capable of delivering.

The second constraint is the 180-degree shutter rule. Professional video requires shutter speed to be set at approximately double the frame rate — 1/50s for 25fps, 1/60s for 30fps — to produce natural-looking motion blur. In bright outdoor conditions without filtration, maintaining this shutter speed is simply not possible without overexposing the image. Raising the shutter speed to compensate produces footage where motion looks rigid and unnatural — a characteristic that is immediately visible on screen and difficult to correct in post.
